As your company grows, you may understandably be looking to professionalise your key projects and be looking for people who can coordinate and manage them. It is only natural to look at your own experienced staff who already know the work.

But taking on a PM role can be very scary in our sector, the first time out! The exact duties of the role are not easy to set down. Our structures often feature a role without direct authority – and also leading others who are much more expert than the PM.

Performance can suffer if the PM can’t take a strong lead – as well as building and motivating the project team to work in an engaged way.

In the small company, there is often no possibility of central resources to support the role, either!
